Itineraries:
COSTA SMERALDA
Costa Smeralda is the name of the coast area in the northeast of Sardinia. It is located between the Arzachena gulf and the Cugnana gulf. The 55 km long coastline present bays, promontories, small islands and amazing beaches. The most famous tourist areas are Porto Cervo, Poltu Cuatu, Liscia di Vacca, Capricciosi and Cala di Volpe. Costa Smeralda was previously called “Monti di Mola”. The name comes from 1962, when a prince named Karim Aga Khan bought these poor lands and with a pool of eminent architects decided to project this incredible area.
PORTO CERVO:
Porto Cervo was built around 1960, also by Karim Aga Khan. When the team of well-known architects landed from Luigi Vietti, they created this haven for elite tourists. The success came thanks to the design inspired by typical north Sardinian style, poor and rudimental, but it perfectly matched the environment around it. Today Porto Cervo is a fraction of Arzachena in the region of Gallura. This is the main centre of Costa Smeralda. The centre is made of a mezzanine part where you can find the famous “piazzatta” (small square), many small shops, restaurants and hotels. Around the centre there are different VIP mansions and night clubs. The harbour was extended in the 80’s and nowadays it can host more than 700 parked boats. If you take a walk in the harbour you can admire many of the most beautiful boats of the Mediterranean Sea.
CANNIGGIONE:
CANNIGGIONE: Cannigione is a fraction of Arzachena, it has 350 inhabitants and it is located 10 km away from Porto Cervo. It was built to be a fishing village around the 1900’s, but it grew with the tourism in the 1960’s and today it is a reference point of Costa Smeralda. In the nice harbour Free Charter has one of our bases, from here you can easily reach all of the most famous areas of the northern Sardinia. Close to Cannigione are the following renowned places: La Conia, Mannena and Barca Bruciata.
AROUND:
Arcipelago della Maddalena: This is a group of islands just in front of Costa Smeralda. The most important islands are: La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Razzoli, Budelli and Spargi. This archipelago is well-known thanks to the amazing colour of the beaches, and for the fantastic cliffs around them. Caprera is celebrated because it hosted Garibaldi (the famous hero of the Italian unification).
Cala di Volpe: This gulf is a legendary area well known for the purity of its water and the many VIP yachts that come here. This place is located just a few miles away from Porto Cervo.
Capriccioli: Another example of an amazing beach with clear water and spectacular sights.
Mortorio:This is an island that is part of an Archipelago also called Mortorio. This group of islands is located south of La Maddalena.
ISOLA DI SAN PIETRO:
CARLOFORTE (U Paizè as the locals would say) is a small town of 6.000 inhabitants located on the coast of the island called Isola di San Pietro. The island was colonised in 1738 from people arriving from the Tabarca island (located in Tunisia). However these people were originally from Pegli, in the region of Liguria in the north of Italy. They first moved to Tabarca to fish for coral but they later stopped in Isola di San Pietro and stayed for good after a battle with the Tunisians. Nowadays Carloforte has a lot in common with the region of Liguria, particularly in regards to culture, traditions, history and language. The harbour in Carloforte is one of the biggest in Sardinia and it is also one of Free Charters bases, and from here you can visit the uncontaminated south Sardinia. Isola di San Pietro always charms sailors of the Mediterranean Sea. It is a very cosy island, famous for its amazing coast. The best area of the island is the north, with its absolutely incredible cliffs.
