Anegada

Anegada Yacht Charter Information

Anegada is located at the northernmost of the British Virgin Islands. The only coral island in the volcanic BVI chain, Anegada is a world apart. The Spanish named it Anegada, the Drowned Land.

Anegada lies approximately 15 miles (24 km) north of Virgin Gorda. It is the only inhabited British Virgin Island formed from coral and limestone, rather than being of volcanic origin. While the other islands are mountainous, Anegada is flat and low.

Anegada has sixteen miles of sandy beaches with a primeval quality. The island is guarded by the famous Horseshoe Reef which, at eighteen miles long, is one of the worlds largest coral reefs.

Anegada is an island of coral sand, and thus, beaches are the loveliest in the Caribbean. And they are so deserted; chances are you will not see another set of footsteps on the sand. But you can always find a shady spot at a beach side bar to sit and sip a cool drink.

You can watch the sun disappear into the surf that breaks on the reef surrounding Anegada. For centuries ships have been lost on this treacherous reef, but these wrecks provide a boon for todays visitors. They are home to countless exotic fish and marine life, making Anegada a paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers.

You no longer have to risk shipwreck to visit Anegada; it takes just eleven minutes to fly from Anegadas Beef Island Airport. And in another minute, you will be out on the sandy roads headed for one of the incomparable beaches.

Anegada can be toured in a day. Be prepared for the sun as there is virtually no shade on Anegada. To begin, make a big circle around the salt ponds on the western half of the island. Then, turn in or pull out the harbour area by the Anegada Reef Hotel for food or drinks.

From the Setting Point, head west on the south shore road paralleling the Anegada Harbour. There are several restaurants here, including the Whistling Pines restaurant. Continue on to Pomato Point where the beaches begin.
