The town of Rota is located to the West of El Puerto on the Atlantic coast approximately halfway between Portugal and Gibraltar.
Rota is renowned for its beautiful beaches and hosts the La Castilla which is considered by many visitors as one of the best beaches in Spain. La Castilla beach is set at the foot of the town and stretches for over 4km. It is well-known for offering crystal clear waters and its sand is particularly fine and golden and the beach is edged by some massive pine trees.
Rota is also a renowned yacht charter destination in the area and hosts the Marina Rota (Sanlucar de Barrameda) which can accommodate up to 509 yachts having a maximum length of 15m. The marina is also within easy distance to Marina Chipiona and the Marina America in Cadiz.
During your visit in Rota, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a cultural tour in the historic town where you will discover many interesting historical sites. As soon as you set anchor in the marina of Rota, you will see the famous and impressive Castillo de Luna which lies right on the coast and opens its doors to the Bay of Cadis.
The Castle sits above the remains of an old Muslim Riba and if you are in the area during the summer months, you can assist many music shows that are held within the interior patio of the castle. You can continue your exploration of Rota by heading to the Iglesia de la O which is located right across from the castle.
Another site of interest not to be missed for the cultural point of view is the Torre de la Merced, which is the only tower in the area that stands from the old convent of La Merced which dates back to the 17th century.
You can also sail along the coast from North to South by visiting some interesting beaches in the area like Ballena beach (Whale beach) which is located near Costa Ballena. You can continue you sailing route towards the beach of Aquadulce (known for its sweet/fresh water), Punta Candor or Pierdas Gordas which are located between the town of Rota and Costa Ballena.
Most of the beaches are known for their isolated nature, golden sands and enchanting quality and offer numerous water sports activities like windsurf or kite surf to name some.
