Algeciras is a port city which lies in the South of Spain and is the largest city on the Bay of Gibraltar. It is located in the province of Cadiz, right at the center of the Campo de Gibraltar, on the western site of Bahia de Algeciras opposite to the city of Gibraltar.
Today the port of Algeciras (Puerto de Algeciras) is one of the largest ports in Europe and also one of the busiest in the World catering 3 categories of vessels: container, cargo and transshipment.
Puerto de Algeciras is situated on the Rio de la Miel at about 20km to the North of Tarifa. Algeciras is also a renowned yacht charter destination in the area and hosts a beautiful marina called the Real Club Nautico de Algericas is the biggest marina and offers 800 berths for yachts measuring up to 12m long.
There are also some interesting marinas nearby like the Marina Tarifa, Marina Barbate, Alcaidesa Marina in Cadiz and Puerto Sotogrande.
You can also visit Rinconcillo district which lies near the beach where you will see the Roman ovens that were used to produce the packaging used by the Carteia in San Roque. Close to the city center, you will see the famous Parque Arqueologico de las Murallas Merinies; the archaeological park of the Medieval city walls.
During your visit in the area, you will have the opportunity to explore the city of Algeciras where a few churches are worth visiting like the Iglesia Nuestra Senora de la Palma . Opposite, you will find the famous Capilla Nuestra Virgen de Europa.
The San Isidro Church is also worth visiting, it houses one of the most worshipped statues by the inhabitants of Algeciras called the Nuestro Padre Jesus de Medinaceli.
If you happen to get tired and want to free from the hustle and bustle of the city life, you can also head to the North of the centre where you will find the Parque Maria Cristina. It is a nice park where you will see many trees and benches to relax.
There is also another park nearby, the Museo Municipal which is near to a beautiful beach nearby. During your sailing trip along the coast, you can also visit some of the most popular beaches in the area, the Playa Getares which is a few kilometers to the South of the town and Playa del Rinconcillo further to the North.
