This is one of the smaller islands in The Dodecanese Archipelago and it lies to the North of the island of Rhodes. It is a mountainous area and includes the harbor town of Symi and its adjacent upper town called Ano Symi and is dotted with many beaches and some areas of significance history and mythology.
Symi was once a famous for its shipbuilding and renowned for having built the fast galleys that were used in the 12th and the 13th centuries. The shipbuilders of the area used to hack down the trees to build the galleys but today the shipbuilding industry is long gone as most of the trees were killed off by diseases.
The island of Symi is today a barren rock with a few farms scattered over the hills. Symi boasts one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece and is a renowned yacht charter destination in the area.
On either side of the steep-sided fjord, there are numerous houses, some are white, and some are pastel yellow, but virtually most of them are Neo-classical pediments, a reminder that, 100 years ago, Symi was one of Greece most prosperous island.
Most of the travelers who come to visit Symi tend to stay either near its main harbor or up at the old town of Chorio.
During a yacht charter trip in the area, you can visit the Old town of Chorio which lies at the top end of Syri Kali Strata where you will find lots of alleys and narrow streets.
In the old town, you find a few ruined houses and some old buildings that are being slowly renovated and restored.
There are also numerous taverns and restaurants which are centered on the village square.
Near the island’s main harbor, Gialos, you can visit the famous Nautical Museum of Symi where you can see a large collection of old maps, ships models and some other exhibits from the maritime life of the island.
While sailing along the coastline, you will find that the best beaches are located on the East coast. The most famous beaches are Aghia Marina, Pedi, Agios Nikolaos, Ag Georgios Disalona, Nanou, Marathounda and Panormitis beach.
Snorkeling is a popular activity in the area and the clear water and the numerous colorful fishes and corals make Symi an excellent destination for diving enthusiasts.
