Nisyros is a Greek volcanic island located in the Aegean Sea and is part of the Dodecanese archipelago. It is situated between the islands of Kos and Tilos and is characterized by its round shape surrounded by several islets where the largest is known as Gyali.
Nisyros is often described as a place of wild beauty and as an unspoiled haven of peace and tranquility. The island is surrounded by the clear waters of the Aegean Sea coupled with a pleasant small village atmosphere.
The capital city of Nisyros is Mandraki and it is also the harbor of the island, with its numerous white houses which are aligned below the imposing rock where the Monastery of the Panagia Spiliani stands.
Nisyros is a renowned yacht charter destination in the area and soon as you set anchor at the harbor, you will find the Castle of Spiliani (a memento from the knight’s passing) which dominates the harbor from a height of about 150m.
The view from the castle is spectacular; it offers a unique picture of the harbor, the black volcanic rock shores around the island and the islets of Gyali, Pergousa, Strongyli and Pachia in the background.
During a visit in the area, you will quickly find out that there are numerous interesting places to be visited in and around Mandraki. You can visit Paleokastro or the Old Fortress whose ruins are located just a few kilometers from the village. You can still find traces of the fortified walls of this amazing site which dates back to the 4th century BC.
You can also visit the nearby Ancient cemetery dating back to the 7th or the 6th century.
Regarding to entertainment, you should not expect a vibrant nightlife when visiting Nisyros, nightlife in the area is rather quiet with some peaceful and beautiful taverns and there are also many cafes and bars scattered over the island.
While sailing along the beautiful coastline of Nisyros, yacht charterers will discover numerous beautiful beaches, where most of them are pebbled beaches.
The most famous beaches on the island are the beaches of Aspri Ammos and of Lies; there is also the Hohlakoi beach which is renowned for its black pebbles formed by the volcanic lava.
The port of Mandraki is a good starting point to explore the surrounding islets like Agios Antonios and Giali.
