Martigues lies in the southeastern part of France to the northwest of Marseille. It lies in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur region and is situated on the side of the lake of Etang de Berre and is linked to the sea by the Caronte channel.
The Port Martigues or the Port Maritima à sec lies on the right-hand side of the Canal de Caronte and about 3 miles across the Golfe de Fos and is about 5m away from the town of Martigues.
The Port Martigues has about 320 pontoon berths for yachts and storage ashore for over 1000 more.
It has good access to the town centre, to Marseille and the airport, however advance booking is particularly recommended as the area gets very busy during the yacht charter seasons.
Martigues is renowned in the French Riviera for the charm of its canals, its numerous islands and bridges and for these reasons, it is often called the Venise Provencale.
During a visit in the area, you can wander along the various quays, especially in the famous Quartier des pecheurs which is located around the canal of Saint Sebastien.
The Miroir aux oiseaux is also worth visiting when you are in the area, the building dates back since the 17th century when the local fishermen used to live in the colorful old houses which are lined by the banks of the canal.
Yacht charter visitors will also appreciate the beautiful beach of La Couronne and will be captivated by the tiny Port de Carro, which is a charming fishing port and also a marina well sheltered by the Mistral.
During a visit at the Port Martigues, you will have the opportunity to visit the Old Town where you will find beautiful ancient architectural buildings. You can visit the Church of St Geniès which dates back since the 17th century for the order of Malta.
It is particularly recommended to visit the Chapelle d’Annonciade whose interior is filled with a baroques style and has been listed as a historical monument of France.
For yacht charters who appreciate long seaside walks, they can follow along the limestone coast to the famous lighthouse of La Couronne and enjoy its ever-changing view. On the West of La Couronne beach, you come across the fishing village of Carro. Carro is a windy sand beach and it is a renowned spot for kite surfers.
