Vila Real de Santo Antonio is city which lies in the East of the Algarve in the South of Portugal. The town is set on the Guadiana River which divides the Algarve from Spain.
If you stand on the far eastern side of the city, you can clearly see the beautiful Spanish coastline and also the bridge which lies over the river that connects the city to Ayamonte in Spain.
Vila Real de Santo Antonio is a peaceful town, beautifully quaint with a rich local culture dotted with an open sandy beach stretching uninterrupted along several kilometers towards Manta Rota which is located near Tavira.
Vila Real de Santo Antonio is also a popular yacht charter location in the Algarve and the marina of Vila Real de Santo Antonio lies on the West bank of the river.
It is new marina which was inaugurated at the beginning of 1998 and which offers over 340 sheltered berths for visiting yachts.
As the Guadiana River is navigable, yacht charter can sail all the way up to Pomarao which lies halfway between Alcoutim and Mértola on the East bank.
Along the river, near the small villages of Alcoutim, Sanlúcar and Pomarão, you will also find some good anchorage during your trip.
Vila Real de Santo Antonio is an ideal destination for walking and cycling, it boasts a rather flat terrain like its neighbor Monte Gardo.
During a visit in the town, you will have the opportunity to explore the many lovely buildings along with its array of shops, cafes bars and restaurants.
There are also many interesting churches, galleries and historical remains that are worth visiting and also a number of leisure activities to enjoy.
It is particularly recommended to visit the Avenida da República which runs along the front of the town, adjacent to the river. It is an attractive riverfront beautifully lined with trees and water features hosting a beautiful marina full of some of the most beautiful boats and yachts.
Near the marina, you can also enjoy some boat trips along the coast and partake in some deep sea fishing excursions.
You can also enjoy some of the various annual events held in the city like the carnivals in Praça Marquês de Pombal and its medieval fairs or the Day of the city celebrations, historical parades held through the city.
