Sesimbra is a municipality of Portugal, in the Setúbal District which lies at the foothills of the Serra da Arrábida, a mountain range between Setúbal and Sesimbra. Due to its particular position at the Setúbal Bay, near the mouth of the Sado River and its natural harbour, it is an important fishing town.
Besides professional fishing and sport fishing, the most significant revenues in Sesimbra come from tourism. The town is famous for its beaches, fish restaurants and nightlife.
A tourist travelling to Sesimbra can appreciate its beaches, traditional fish restaurants and the Arrábida National Park.
In late afternoon the fishing boats return and there is a fish auction on the dockside. That same fresh fish can be sampled at one of the several restaurants along the shore. A short drive or a 30-minute bus journey from Sesimbra leads to windswept Cabo Espichel.
The views of the coast and ocean are stunning. They include cliffs that drop almost vertically on several hundred feet into the Atlantic. In such a dramatic and pristine setting, it is not surprising that large dinosaur footprints were found nearby on Lagosteiros Beach.
Sesimbra lies just south of Lisbon from where you have to cross the Tagus river on the spectacular 17km-long Vasco da Gama cable-stayed bridge. It is basically a small fishing village, overlooked by the serene 13th century castle which dominates the landscape from the top of a nearby hill and guarded by a 17th century fort near the beach.
