Cuba

Cuba Yacht Charter Information

The Republic of Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean. The nation of Cuba consists of the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud, and several archipelagos. Havana is the largest city in Cuba and capital. Santiago de Cuba is the second largest city. To the north of Cuba lies the United States and the Bahamas, Mexico is to the west, the Cayman Islands and Jamaica are to the south, and Haiti and the Dominican Republic are to the southeast. It is the most populous island nation in the Caribbean, as well as the largest by area. Its people, culture, and customs draw from diverse sources.

The local climate is tropical, moderated by northeasterly trade winds that blow year-round. In general (with local variations), there is a drier season from November to April, and a rainier season from May to October. The warm temperatures of the Caribbean Sea and the fact that Cuba sits across the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico combine to make the country prone to frequent hurricanes. These are most common in September and October.

Yachters are expected to anchor at the public marinas. Private vessels may enter at Marina Hemingway in Havana or Marina Acua in Varadero. There are no visa requirements. Cuba has spotless white sandy beaches, coconut palm trees and an underwater world that is home to 500 species of fish and fifty different coral types surround this exciting island. Cuba and the surrounding islands have a sub tropical climate, which is influenced by balmy northeast trade winds. The coral reefs and cayos off the Cuban coast are among the most breathtaking snorkelling and diving destinations of the world. Whale Sharks can be seen off the Cuban coasts during Summer and also Marlins from May to September, as well as other game fish like Tarpons and Bone Fish.

There are two main island groups to explore during your yacht charter vacation along the southern shore of Cuba, and two main bases to explore them from are Trinidad and Cienfuegos.  The sailing areas from the two main bases incorporate the Canarreos Archipelago and the Juventud Islands to the west, or Jardines de la Reina Archipelago to the east, perfect playgrounds for yacht charters.

One of the largest and most prospering cities of Cuba, Cienfuegos on the main island has a commercial harbour with a tourist marina very close to the French-style centre. Filled with entertainment and eateries, the city is a hub of activity for shopping or just soaking up the Cuban culture. The city is dubbed the Pearl of the South. The base in Trinidad is 15 minutes from the colonial style city of Trinidad, located in the centre of the south coast of Cuba. Discover the best-preserved historical city of Cuba, restored to its 16th century apparel. Together with the nearby Valle de los Ingenios, it has been one of UNESCO World Heritage sites since 1988.
